Fall 2007 Workshops

Patent Protection and Prosecution-- Friday, October 19 -- 1:30 - 3:30 pm in Engineering and Biological Sciences Complex conference room #2134

This workshop covers what each inventor must know about patent protection and prosecution. Several critical questions will be addressed such as what is covered under patents and what is not, and what are the ownership rights? It is important to know the requirements for a patent, so that one can maximize the chances for a patent grant by the US Patent and Trademark Office. An understanding of what the patent examiners look for in a patent application, and how one can develop a strategy to maximize the chances for a patent to be granted, better prepares inventors in the discovery stage. Please come with your questions and we will explore them together.

Copyrights and Copywrongs-- Friday, November 2 -- 1:30 - 3:30 pm in Engineering and Biological Sciences Complex conference room #2134

In academic settings we create a significant body of the creative works that are protected under copyrights. We also use a significant portion of others work in our teaching efforts. So what are copyrights and copywrongs? Who owns what in a creation? More importantly what are the ownership rights and for how long? What can the owner do with these rights? These are some of the critical questions that the workshop will address. One often learns that academia can use the copyright protected works for educational purposes. However, it is not that simple. There are some restrictions. We will cover the freedom one has to use the fair use exclusion. This workshop covers the basics of copyright laws as they apply to educational institutions. The workshop will better prepare you not only to protect your own works, but also to avoid infringing upon the work of others.

How Do Trademarks Fit in the Intellectual Property Spectrum?-- Friday, November 16 -- 1:30 - 3:30 pm in Engineering and Biological Sciences Complex conference room #2134

Trademarks serve an important purpose in the business world, and they can also be a significant revenue generator for some entities. Here are some of the questions that we intend to cover in this informal workshop: What constitutes a trademark, what are the ownership rights, and for how long? How does one get the ownership rights and protect the rights? What is involved in creating one? Various entities spend money to promote their trademarks. The other end of the spectrum is trade secrets. What is involved in trade secrets, and what legal instruments one must have in place to protect proprietary information. The workshop will cover both extremes of the spectrum.
